  • Beginning artists think BIG! They love to see huge splashes of color cover the page. These block crayons are perfect for making a big impact and perfect for little hands to hold.
  • Your child will begin with a few simple shapes—first squiggles, then vertical lines, horizontal lines and circles.
  • Soon your little Picasso will learn to copy or trace shapes (use a paper cup or cookie cutters for him/her to trace around). He’ll/she’ll also begin to use more than just his/her favorite color. You can draw a rainbow to show your child what different colors look like next to each other.
  • In no time your child will begin to use simple shapes to draw recognizable pictures. Don’t label his pictures for him/her. Instead ask your little one to tell you what he/she drew. You may be surprised at the answer you get.
  • Teach your child numbers by writing them on a piece of paper. Have your toddler repeat the names of the numbers with you. Then see if he/she can copy the numbers you have drawn.  As he/she gains confidence with number recognition you can say a number aloud and ask him/her to draw it.

  • Reinforce this learning by drawing a picture that goes with the letter, like D for dog or C for cat.  Then have your child color in the picture by asking for a specific color and see if he/she gets it right.
  • Your child can collaborate with you or a friend to create one picture. Each child can use a different color or create consecutive lines. Now that’s teamwork!
