    My grandson hasn't had a chance to play with them much, but likes the bugs and immediately found multiple ways to reposition the parts. It is also helpful for small muscle coordination, and I think he and his little brother will get lots if use out of this simple set. Added bonus: Children can provide their own sound effects and imagination to make up stories about the bugs; refreshing concept in this day of noise and computer overload. Good for travel because of the carrying case.

  • At this age your child is beginning to learn about, and gain control, over his/her emotions, like fear. He/she is also becoming highly imaginative and creative. These magnets let him/her use creativity to deal with some of these emotions.
  • Have your little one bugs make  by mixing and matching colors, body parts. He/she can make scary ones, silly ones etc. Have him/her give a name to the emotion or try to re-create the face that goes with an emotion you name.
  • You can make a spinner with each body part as a possible spin. Then play a build a bug game with your child; each player has to spin to get the next piece to add to the character.
  • At around four years of age, your child may begin to draw recognizable pictures. Have him/her practice drawing faces on the faces of the different bugs expressing different emotions. If your preschooler needs some hints he/she can copy one of the bugs from the magnet board.
  • As far as learning toys go, Build a Bug allows you to help develop your child's narrative skills by asking him/her to create a story using the bugs as the characters.
