We actually met the game's designer at Toy Fair in NYC. What he showed us, is how kids use the squirrels to pick up the acorns. Forget the game for a sec...the Squirrel pieces have just enough resistance that they really help develop the small muscles in a kids hands (think of 'chop sticks with springs).
And as the children get better at picking up the acorns, they will hold the squirrel like a pencil. We love it.
