- Begin by sitting with your child and looking through the Fun with Spelling cards. Say the name of the object on the card aloud so your child begins to hear the sounds the letters make.
- The cards are self-correcting because the wrong spelling of a word won't fit together and the picture won't match. This develops his/her ability to reason and learn through trial and error.
- At first your child will put the cards together by matching the pictures. Soon, with your guidance, he/she will be able to sound out the beginning and ends of the words and start to match the pieces together using the letters. Make the sounds of the letters with your child. For example, "Cow. Starts with C. Sounds like Ka-Ka-Kow."
- Once they put together the picture, ask your preschooler if he/she can name the letters under the picture that make up the name of the object. This practices his/her letter recognition and memory.
