Why Our Experts Love It

The U.S. Map Puzzle is a great, self-correcting puzzle that will help teach your child geography skills.

This puzzle will grow with your child. Just watch as your little one will notice and remember different parts of the map as he/she learns.
  • Puzzles are a great way for children to learn hand-eye coordination and reasoning skills that will help him/her later on in school. The US Map Puzzle is perfect for that.
  • At first your child will remove pieces from the puzzle and put them back using trial and error. You could help him/her by explaining the shape of the state you are looking for and asking him/her to find it for you. “What state is long and skinny with a handle on it? Florida."
  • Your child may also be able to match the pieces back into the puzzle by looking at the pictures or colors on the pieces of the adjoining states. Gradually your child will begin to know what piece goes next.
  • As your child picks up a puzzle piece name the state he/she is holding. Begin with the most recognizable and give him/her memory cues to help his/her recall. For example, “Texas is the biggest." Or “California is the longest."
  • Talk about each state with your preschooler. Point out the illustrations on each state to your child and explain the defining characteristics in that area, like why are there crabs on Maryland? You can expand on this by asking questions, like “Why do you think oranges grow in Florida but not Vermont?" This works on his/her inference skills.
  • Teach your child about the compass directions, north, south, east and west. With the puzzle put together, show your little one the different regions of the country, based on the compass directions. Have your child remove the puzzle pieces by grouping the states into regions-- northeast, southwest, etc. This works on categorization skills.
  • Your child can use the map of the states to play “travel agency" and plan trips. Planning trips will help with sequencing, attention to details and organization skills.
