Features and Skills
- Playing games develops great social skills in children, because they always have to play with a friend. Races teach children that they won't win every time, but they will win sometimes. When your child doesn't win, it's a good opportunity to teach him/her to keep trying. Point out to your preschooler that every time you play a game there is the possibility of a different outcome.
- In this Egg and Spoon Race toddler game, each child chooses a color spoon, holds the spoon in one hand and races to the finish line.
- For an extra challenge, have the race go from the starting line to a certain point then turn around and go back again. When the children get to the turning point, have them switch the hand that is holding the spoon. This should make for some giggly times as they switch to their less dominant hand.
- Vary the race for the children. You can make the course more interesting by adding obstacles or curves in the path, instead of having the children run straight ahead. Or watch how much fun they have when they try to hop on one foot from start to finish instead of running.
- You can encourage your child to be a good teammate by running the Egg and Spoon race as a three-legged race. This demands quite a bit of coordination, as the children have to work together to establish a rhythm in order to move forward. If they find it too difficult at first, give them a tip ”try counting the steps aloud as you race." This helps the children step at the same time and stay balanced.
